Create your own repo

A simple, step-by-step guide for developers using the TaskLayer Project Template. Create a repository, run it locally, and configure it for a new project.
santhoshsharuk/tasklayer-project-templateUse the template when starting a new TaskLayer-based project, then customize the project data for the work you are building.
Click “Use this template” and create a separate repository for your project. Keep the template repo as the reusable starter.
Install Node.js LTS, clone your new repository, then run start_windows.bat on Windows.
Update the project registry and create a project JSON file. Use the included project-setup skill with a supported coding agent.
Follow these steps in order. Commands below assume Windows and a terminal such as PowerShell or VS Code Terminal.
Open the template, select Use this template → Create a new repository, choose a project name, then create it.
Install Node.js if it is not already on your computer. Verify the installation in a terminal.
node --version npm --version
Copy the URL from the repository you just created — not the original template URL.
git clone YOUR_NEW_REPOSITORY_URL cd YOUR_REPOSITORY_FOLDER
In the repository folder, double-click start_windows.bat. Alternatively, run it from the terminal.
.\start_windows.bat
Then visit http://127.0.0.1:4173.
Create a new file under data/projects/ using bhavani-stores.json as the schema example, then add its entry to data/projects.json.
Open the repo in your agent-enabled editor and ask it to read .claude/skills/project-setup/SKILL.md or .agents/skills/project-setup/SKILL.md, then initialize and validate your project.
TaskLayer is a lightweight project task tracker starter — not a hosted multi-user service.

Project → Sections → Tasks, stored as JSON.
Project initialization guidance for supported coding agents.
Workflow checks Node syntax and JSON parsing.
Move to SQLite or PostgreSQL for concurrent production use.
The current README documents Node.js LTS and the Windows start script. Follow the repository files as the source of truth; do not assume a package installation step unless the template adds a package.json or dependencies.
Not as-is. The current prototype binds to localhost and stores data in JSON files. A public, multi-user deployment needs authentication, authorization, input validation, safe persistence, backups and operational monitoring.
No live sync is implied. “Use this template” creates a new repository based on the starter. Changes you make in one repository do not automatically update the other.
Start with README.md and GITHUB_TEMPLATE_SETUP.md. The agent instructions are in .claude/skills/project-setup/SKILL.md and .agents/skills/project-setup/SKILL.md.
In the current prototype, project changes are written to local JSON files in the repository's data folder. Keep backups and avoid storing secrets or sensitive production data there.
Create your own repo first, then follow the guide from top to bottom.
